A Guide for the Wanderlust

Marrying in Denmark

Known as the easiest place for international couples to say "I do," Denmark combines legal simplicity with breathtaking Nordic backdrops. Here is everything you need to know about eloping in the heart of Scandinavia.

Simple Legalities

Unlike many EU countries, Denmark requires minimal paperwork and no long residency periods for foreigners.

Global Recognition

Your Danish marriage certificate is legally binding worldwide and issued in five languages (including English and German).

Love is Love

Denmark was the first country to recognize same-sex unions, making it a sanctuary for all couples.

01.

The Approval

Before you can pick a date, you must apply to the Danish Agency of Family Law (Familieretshuset). The application is done online, and the fee is approximately 1,900 DKK. They will review your passports, visas (if required), and proof of relationship.

Choose Your Setting

Once approved, you can choose where to marry. Most couples opt for the historic Copenhagen City Hall, but you can also choose island municipalities like Ærø or even a wild outdoor location with a private celebrant.

The Witnesses

To make it legal, you need two witnesses. If you are eloping just the two of you at City Hall on a weekday, the municipality can often provide witnesses for you. If you marry elsewhere, I am always honored to sign as your witness while capturing your story.

Apostille & Beyond

Depending on your home country, you may need an Apostille stamp from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to use your certificate back home. It’s a simple process in Copenhagen that usually takes less than an hour.
